The full traditional list

The traditional list assigns a symbolic material to each anniversary year. Paper at year one is meant to signal the fragility of a new bond. Diamond at year sixty marks the durable hardness of a marriage that has run six decades. Between them sits a sequence of materials chosen for their handcraft origins and their everyday meaning.

The 1937 codification is the basis of nearly every published list since. Earlier British guides from 1922 cover the major milestones (1, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 50). The 1937 American expansion filled in the off-years and standardised the canon for English-language reference.
